Julian Hattem is a journalist who focuses on issues of politics, law, conflict, migration and popular culture. He has been based in the U.S. and East Africa and was previously on staff with the Associated Press, The Hill and The Yomiuri Shimbun. In 2017 he was a fellow with the International Reporting Project in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

His writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Washington Post, Public Radio International, World Politics Review, NPR, Quartz, Prefix Magazine and The Atlantic, among other outlets. He has appeared on radio and TV programs including MSNBC, CBC, C-SPAN, BBC World Service and SiriusXM.
