Julian Hattem is a freelance journalist who focuses on issues of conflict, law, politics, foreign relations and popular culture. He was based in Uganda from mid-2016 through 2017 and reported from around East Africa. In the spring of 2017 he was a fellow with the International Reporting Project in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Previously, he spent several years as a staff writer with The Hill in Washington, D.C., most recently covering national security and foreign policy. Before that, he reported on the White House and U.S. politics for the Japanese newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun. He is HEFAT trained.

His writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Washington Post, Public Radio International, World Politics Review, Quartz, NPR, Prefix Magazine and The Atlantic, among other outlets. He has appeared on radio and TV programs including MSNBC, CBC, C-SPAN, BBC World Service and SiriusXM.
